CLARK — School officials considering outsourcing technical support services at Arthur L. Johnson High School have met with some resistance from teachers concerned about the possible layoff of existing staff.
Board of Education member Laura Caliguire said new budget restraints and dwindling aid money has led the district to make more use of outside companies.
“It’s the same thing we’ve done with our maintenance and our cafeteria services,” Caliguire explained. “We’re looking at what could be more fiscally sound and responsible for the schools and the township.”
Local teachers have attended recent Board of Education meetings asking school officials to reconsider this course of action.
Arthur L. Johnson high School Principal Richard Delmonaco declined to comment on the proposed outsourcing, noting the bids were still out.
“I don’t have the details of what the plan is,” he said.
District Superintendent Renae LaPrete said the idea has been met with both opposition and support.
“I’ve heard more pros than cons personally,” LaPrete.
Caliguire stressed that no decisions have been reached regarding the outsourcing of tech support at ALJ Business Administrator William Muzzio said it is not known how many employees may be laid off under this proposal.
“The board right now is analyzing bids against the current expenditure,” he said. “We’re still in preliminary discussion about what we’re going to do.”
The district employs a number of computer technicians that perform troubleshooting, repairs and other tasks, not all of whom may be effected by the board’s decision.
LaPrete said that as technology becomes a bigger part of education, more numerous and costly staff are needed to support it.
