Gina Trani, a player others can look up to, nets her 1,000th point in a Johnson girls' basketball victory over Governor Livingston

Johnson second-year girls' basketball coach Tom Chmiel will miss Gina Trani when the season ends.

From the time she saw her first varsity action as a freshman three seasons ago, Trani has proven to be a player that not only possesses talent, but is one that displays an intangible quality that has led to the Crusaders winning quite a few more times than not with her in the lineup.

Monday at home on Senior Night was one of those cases. After Johnson lost at Governor Livingston in Union County Conference-Mountain Division play earlier in the season, Trani made sure that was not going to happen again in Clark.

Trani netted a game-high 26 points to reach and pass 1,000 and - more importantly - helped lead the Crusaders to a 50-45 triumph over the Highlanders.

Johnson, which is scheduled to host Nutley Tuesday, improved to 14-8. GL fell to 11-10. Both Johnson and GL will be competing in the Central Jersey, Group 2 playoffs.

Trani entered Monday's game with 988 points after netting a game-high 23 in last Thursday's 65-58 overtime setback to Roselle in a Union County Tournament quarterfinal at Roselle Catholic.

Trani, a forward who wears No. 13, but has proved to be a quite a good luck charm for the Crusaders the past four seasons, has helped make other players around her better. Those performers include juniors Kristy Pflug, Kate Matthews and Jessica Schurtz, sophomores Cyndi Wilson and Michelle Smorol and freshman Eryka Underwood. All will return for the 2010-2011 season.

TRANI AND CHMIEL JOIN LIST OF MILESTONE ACHIEVERS THIS SEASON

Gina Trani became one of several senior players in Union County who reached 1,000 points this season.

Others include Allison Skrec of Roselle Catholic, Jakoya Duggans of Roselle and Emily Cristaldi of Summit.

Tom Chmiel, who won most of his 200 games at Colonia - his record at Johnson so far is 28-18, including 14-10 last year - joined Roselle Catholic 14th-year head coach Joe Skrec and Dayton 13th-year head coach Dave Rennie as coaches who have own their 200th games this season. Skrec was first and Rennie, who also coached at Union for four years, was second.

Westfield head coach Joe Marino, in his 11th season, won his 100th game this year.
