By JR ParachiniUnion County Sports EditorOne of the most prolific scorers in state history, Johnson senior center Nick Villaverde's four-year varsity ice hockey career came to a conclusion Tuesday (March 2) night.
In a Public B preliminary round state tournament game at Ice Vault in Wayne, 20th-seeded Johnson was ousted by 13th-seeded Lakeland 4-0.
Villaverde, who helped lead Johnson to winning seasons all four of his years, finished the 2009-2010 campaign with 42 goals and 44 assists.
For his career, he scored 161 goals, assisted on 138 others and finished with 299 points. He will next play club hockey at The College of New Jersey in Ewing Township.
Villaverde finished second in school history in goals behind the 170 Dan Kargus produced before he graduated in 2005. He set school records for career assists and points.
Villaverde is also sixth in the state on the all-time scoring list.

Villaverde passed Kargus as Johnson's all-time leading scorer earlier this year. Kargus finished with 170 goals and 69 assists for 269 points.
Kargus is presently 15th in the state on the all-time scoring list.

Johnson finished second in the Union County Ice Hockey League this season and reached the Union County Cup semifinals. The Crusaders' overall record was 11-8-4 and league mark 7-2-3 for 17 points.

Johnson went 13-8-3.
FRESHMAN YEAR: 2006-2007 - 33 goals, 25 assists for 58 points
Johnson went 15-8-0.
Sophomore Sal Demarzo finished second on the team in scoring this year, scoring 36 goals and assisting on 27 others for 63 points.
